Doris Florig

“Weaving an Adventure”

Doris Florig, a “Nomadic Contemporary Weaver” has been chosen to give the keynote address on Friday evening, June 15, at the 2018 MAWS Conference.  Doris will share stories of her adventures living on a sail boat in the Caribbean, learning weaving techniques from the indigenous people, experimenting with natural dyes and rediscovering history through the eyes of a fiber artist.  Doris exemplifies the conference theme of “The Sky’s the Limit!” with her adventurous spirit and amazing variety of fiber interests and expertise, including tapestry weaving, fiber sculpting and dyeing.  Doris maintains a studio during the summer as resident artist at the Teton Science School, Kelly Campus, just north of Jackson Hole, Wyoming.  There she inspires students with many wonderful art works in progress, including tapestries, wool sculptures of mountain goats, bison and trees among others, and, this summer, an installation exploring river ecology with a simulated felt riverbed created by and with her students.  During the cold weather months, Doris and her husband, sail the Caribbean, visiting other countries and continuing to learn the indigenous weaving traditions of many world cultures.  Doris loves the adventure of this exploration as well as the joy of sharing her discoveries with others.  Doris has been weaving, teaching, writing and exhibiting her work since the 1970’s.  Her recently published book, Weaving an Adventure, will be available for purchase at the conference and there will be a book-signing after her address.  We are delighted to welcome Doris to the MAWS 2018 conference at Big Sky and look forward to the stories and inspiration she will be sharing with us.
